IN BLOOM FEBRUARY UPDATE – LET’S START TO BE SMART

Emerging snowdrops and daffodils remind us that Spring is round the corner. And, with the visit of In Bloom judges less than five months away (in early July) it also means that we need to start smartening things up. Floral displays will be important but general tidiness will show that we care for our village and its environment.

The Downton Society, which is spear-heading Downton In Bloom, has scheduled dates in the diary for May and June for cleaning railings and bridges. In the next few weeks, the Parish Council are having new litter bins installed in the village and litter picks are planned. They have also booked a Wiltshire Council “Sparkle” team (who knew?) to help clear verges and pavements nearer the judging date.

In the meantime, every resident and business can help by tidying areas immediately outside their own premises or around street facing doors or gates:

  • tackle weeds & prepare neglected borders and tubs,
  • cut back ivy and trim hedges (before March is a good idea so that nesting birds are not disturbed in the late Spring)
  • mend broken fences and walls.

  • Think about helping a neighbour if you know they would find these tasks difficult.

    Let’s Start to be Smart
    Let’s Do it together

Grow Social” is the Royal Horticultural Society theme for this year, so if you would like to volunteer to help us tidy up parts of the village or to plant up the new tubs after the Cuckoo Fair in May, please get in contact with:
